about

George Gee's ever popular band is back with its second Zort Music release - recorded live at the prestigious Zurich Festival in 2001 in a public concert at Zurich's historic main train station.

An "On the Road" YouTube video captures the steaming event and the backdrop rehearsals and band interactions.

The virtuosity and swingability of this veteran-packed band was on display that steaming summer evening captured here live. Selections include the rarely heard Duke Ellington's One Man Dance, Harry James' Trumpet Blues and Cantible, a Latin masterpiece Sunny Ray by Ray Santos, and a cool Curtis-Dixon Soul Serenade played, soulfully of course, by Charles Stephens. The CD is dedicated to Frank Foster, whose song Blues at Frankie's Flat features veteran Eddie Bert and music director Walt Szymanski.

The evening featured a toe to toe battle of the bands with the Count Basie Orchestra (music not on this CD.) Gee's Hampton, Ellington, and even Basie veterans and accomplished younger musicians fought the evening to a draw or maybe won the battle.
